Everybody does have certain things in life they want to accomplish. These goals vary from person to person: A brand new car, spending a few weeks on an exotic island, get the promotion at work.
YES! That’s what you want. Congratulations, at least you know what you want – there are heaps of people without any visions or dreams. Still, there are a few things to do in order to get closer to your dream. It is beneficial to have the right mindset, but it’s necessary to set S.M.A.R.T Goals. Never heard of that? No worries, you’re on the right way with continuing reading.
S for SPECIFIC: Take another look on the example goals mentioned above. Do you recognize anything? Exactly. Those goals are very unspecific. When you’re daydreaming about your holiday, you see yourself snorkeling with walesharks next to this little island called Tonga. Alright, so your goal is going to Tonga. In two years – before or on the 13.10.2019 – you want to hang out there for three weeks and this will cost you $5000. That is more specific. The more detailed your goal becomes, the better. Keep in mind: your goal can also be a bit unrealistic, it always depends on how much you want it.
“Aim for the stars and you’ll reach the ceiling. Aim for the ceiling and you’ll stay on the floor”
M for MEASURABLE: Measurable means, you have concrete evidence that your reached your goal – or about to reach it. You have to break it down into smaller steps. For example, you have to save money:
$5000 in two years: 5000/24 = $208,3/month saving for your trip.
After you saved some money for your Tonga adventure you go and buy a ticket (trust me, THIS will give you the biggest boost!). Then you save some more and you book your accomodation and also the wale watching package. While you’re saving money you can do your research and also talk to people who have been to your point of interest. Talking about and sharing your goal is very helpful and makes it even more realistic for you. Make sure you surround yourself with like-minded people! Every small step brings you closer to your dream. The feeling of getting closer to your dream is incredibly rewarding – you will see!
A for ATTAINABLE: Is the goal you set attainable? Do your research and investigation if it’s really possible for you to do it. And then start straight away. You don’t have the money or time to do it? Well, depending on how bad you want it – you will find a solution. Accept the job this guy recently offered you. Try to cut out unnecessary expenses (no, you don’t need the new iPhone). And suddenly you will be able to get closer towards your goal. But hey, even if you end up saving $3000 in two years you still can go and have a sweet time over there. Just try your best!
R for RELEVANT: Let’s be honest – are your goals your goals or did someone else set it for you? Why do you want to reach the goal? What is the objective behind it?
T for TIMELY: Set deadlines. These little helpers are what most of the people make switch to action. But be careful! You have to be a bit realistic and flexible when it comes to that, otherwise you will get mad at yourself.
“One day, or day one!”
Now it’s on you. You have to get started, otherwise nothing will happen. What would be the worst case scenario? Exactly, the worst case scenario is not getting started at all. The first step needs to be done – by yourself! Get your stuff together and start! There is absolutely nothing you can loose. But if you won’t start, you already lost the game. Set little steps for every day. Create a To-Do list. Celebrate every tiny step forward. And suddenly you will see and feel it: the accomplishment of your personal goals!
What are your goals for the future? Did you recently accomplish some of them?
